Invisalign is one of the most exciting braces alternatives around, capable of delivering straighter smiles to patients in a more streamlined and convenient manner. However, just because the orthodontic process is seemingly easier, it doesn’t mean patients are off the hook when it comes to oral hygiene; in fact, during Invisalign treatment, it’s still very possible to get cavities, even though the aligners are worn over your teeth! Here’s what you need to know and some tips for protecting your teeth throughout your treatment.
Can I still Get Cavities During Invisalign Treatment?
Invisalign itself does not cause cavities—however, it’s important to maintain consistent oral hygiene during treatment. You might be thinking that since the trays are worn over the teeth, they protect them from bacteria, but in fact, the opposite holds true. When the trays are worn, they actually end up creating an ideal environment for bacteria since they fit so tightly over the teeth. If you fail to brush and floss regularly, this bacteria won’t go anywhere—and it’ll greatly increase your risk of cavities, decay, and other oral health issues that could very well cause treatment setbacks.
What Are Some Tips for Preventing Cavities During Invisalign Treatment?
One of the most important factors when it comes to preventing cavities during your Invisalign treatment is removing the harmful bacteria residing on your aligners. To do this, keep the following in mind:
- Clean your trays regularly – In addition to cleaning your teeth, you need to clean your Invisalign trays. You should make a habit of cleaning them each time you remove them and before you put them back in. Be sure to use regular room temperature water to rinse them off, and when it’s time to brush them, use a soft-bristle brush and mild soap. Invisalign cleaning crystals can also be used.
- Eating and brushing – Because your enamel is weakened from the acidity in food after eating, it’s best to wait a short time before brushing (usually half an hour). If you need to put your aligners in right away, rinse them off and swish some water around your mouth.
- Stick to dietary guidelines – You should never eat or drink anything while wearing Invisalign, with the one exception being clear water. For all other foods and drinks, remove your aligners; eating with them can damage them and expose them to cavity-causing bacteria that remain stuck to their surfaces.
- Pack an Invisalign kit – Anytime you leave the house, it becomes a little easier for your treatment to fall off track, but being prepared with the right supplies can keep things moving. Pack dental floss, spare aligners, or even a small travel-sized toothbrush with you; if you have these items, you’re more likely to use them.
If you do notice a cavity forming, don’t hesitate to let your dentist know; even the smallest cavity has the potential to cause a large setback to your treatment plan!
