Braces have come a long way from being seen as just a part of an “awkward, teenage phase.” Over the years, they’ve appeared in blockbuster movies, hit television shows, and even music culture. This means that if you’ve been thinking about pursuing orthodontic treatment, you’ll certainly be joining some very popular company! Here’s a closer look at some of the most iconic braces moments over the years.
Ugly Betty
When Ugly Betty premiered, Betty Suarez (played by America Ferrera) proudly wore braces throughout much of the series. Her character was smart, driven, and unapologetically herself, and rather than making her look or feel awkward, her braces were a distinct sign of her individuality.
Finding Nemo
Pixar delivered one of the most dramatic and memorable orthodontic portrayals of all time with Darla in Finding Nemo. With part of the movie taking place in a fishtank inside an orthodontist’s office, the character became unforgettable as she terrorized the fish gang while they plotted and carried out their jailbreak back into the sea.
The Princess Diaries
In The Princess Diaries, Mia (played by Anne Hathaway) goes through a royal-level makeover. Even though her braces are removed during the film, they definitely played a contributing role in her transformation, giving her a truly princess-worthy smile.
Monsters University
In this prequel to Monsters Incorporated, we follow a young college-bound Mike Wazowski, our favorite one-eyed green monster, as he meets his rival-turned-future-best friend, Sully. Mike has completed his braces treatment by this point, but he dutifully wears his retainer throughout the film.
Rugrats
Chucky, the red-headed best friend of Tommy Pickles from the cartoon Rugrats, wore braces even though he was just a toddler. Even in the show’s sequel, All Grown Up, he still had braces—meaning he either had some very crooked teeth, or he wasn’t consistently wearing his retainer after the first round of braces!
Napoleon Dynamite
Believe it or not, Napoleon’s on-screen older brother, Kip (played by Aaron Ruell), actually wore real braces during filming. Unlike many movie portrayals where braces are props added for effect, Kip’s orthodontic treatment was authentic. This real-life detail certainly added to the film’s offbeat realism and goofy humor.
Hollywood may love using braces to channel adolescence or to emphasize a dramatic transformation, but the truth about orthodontics is that every day is a step closer to a happier, confidence-inspiring smile, no matter who you are!
