3 Must-Know Tips for Traveling During Invisalign Treatment

It’s safe to say that Invisalign is one of the most exciting orthodontic treatments around—and more and more people these days are opting for these clear aligners to achieve straighter and more confident smiles. One of the biggest perks that Invisalign has to offer is its convenience; the aligners are discreet, removable, and far easier to manage than metal braces. However, if you’ve got an upcoming weekend away from home, work trip, or extended vacation, you may be wondering how to ensure your treatment doesn’t encounter any hiccups. Here are some useful tips to keep in mind.

1. Set a Timer Whenever You Remove Your Trays

The cardinal rule when it comes to Invisalign is wearing your aligners for the required 22 hours every day—especially when you’re away from home. Even a few hours or days can potentially cause a setback. To prevent delays, any time you remove your aligners to eat or brush your teeth, set a timer on your watch or phone so that you’re able to diligently continue wearing them when you’re done.

2. Bring Extra Sets of Aligners

With Invisalign, you swap to a new set of trays every 1 to 2 weeks in order to keep things on track. Of course, if you’re going to be away from home for an extended period, be sure to bring your next set of aligners so that you can change on schedule. However, it also never hurts to bring an older set, too—in case you accidentally lose or damage your current aligners.

3. Be Mindful When Eating/Drinking

It’s true that Invisalign doesn’t come with the same dietary restrictions that metal braces do, if you remove your trays before eating or drinking anything except for regular water. But when away from home, it might be tough to remember to take out your trays for a quick snack or sip. Don’t risk damaging or staining your Invisalign—be sure to remove them, store them in their case, and then enjoy your meal or drink. On a related note, don’t forget to rinse your mouth/aligners before putting them back in!

You don’t have to feel stressed about your orthodontic treatment if you’re traveling in the near future; with Invisalign, it’s incredibly easy to keep things moving, so long as you’re mindful about a few things.
