If you’ve been thinking about straightening your teeth but don’t love the idea of traditional metal braces, you’re not alone. Many patients these days choose more discreet solutions when it comes to orthodontic treatment, including ceramic braces, as well as Invisalign clear aligners. Both of these treatments are designed to improve your smile while keeping things subtle, but they work in different ways and come with their own pros and cons. Here’s a brief breakdown of each option so you can see which one might help you meet your smile goals!
What Are Clear/Ceramic Braces?
Clear/ceramic braces work similarly to traditional braces, but instead of metal brackets, they use tooth colored brackets that blend in more naturally with your teeth. They’re paired with wires and elastic ties just like conventional braces, making them a highly effective, reliable option for many orthodontic cases.
However, they aren’t completely invisible, and though they are mostly stain-resistant, the elastic bands or underlying teeth can still become stained. Of course, they’re also not removable and come with dietary restrictions and cleaning guidelines, such as the need to brush after each meal.
What Is Invisalign?
Invisalign uses a series of custom-made, removable clear aligners that gradually move your teeth into position. Each set of aligners is worn for about one to two weeks before switching to the next, and the patient will wear the aligners for roughly 22 hours every day, only taking them out to eat and perform oral hygiene.
Invisalign aligners are virtually undetectable while being worn, plus since they’re removable, patients won’t have to worry about dietary restrictions. However, the trays require discipline when it comes to wearing them and need to be properly cleaned and cared for—they can easily be damaged or misplaced if you aren’t careful.
Which Option Is Best for Me?
The best choice depends on a combination of factors, including your specific orthodontic needs, your individual lifestyle, and your personal preferences. You might be a good candidate for ceramic braces if you have more complex alignment or bite issues. On the other hand, if you’d prefer a treatment that is fixed, which means less for you to worry about in terms of cleaning, you might prefer ceramic braces regardless of your needs.
However, if your issues aren’t too complicated and you’d prefer something more discreet and removable, so that you can eat what you please, Invisalign might be best. Invisalign also tends to be slightly faster in many cases, though it’s almost entirely dependent on patient compliance.
During your consultation, your orthodontist will speak with you about all of this and help you make the best decision—but know that either route has its benefits and will help you achieve a more confident smile!
