These days, it seems like more patients than ever before are turning toward metal braces to achieve straighter, healthier, and happier smiles. This tried-and-true orthodontic solution remains a staple, but believe it or not, it’s seen quite a lot of changes over the years and has become even more capable of improving future oral health. With that in mind, here are some of the most interesting and little-known facts about braces, so that if you or a loved one needs orthodontic care, you can commit with confidence!

1. Braces Do More Than Just Straighten Teeth

One of the most common reasons that people get braces is to straighten their teeth, but did you know brackets and wires are also used to correct bite problems like overbites or underbites? They can help treat health problems like difficulty chewing or swallowing, breathing issues, or speech difficulties. Having a proper bite can also help your natural teeth last longer, since they won’t be subject to uneven wear.

2. Braces Aren’t Just for Teens

Most people associate metal brackets with the teenage years, but did you know they aren’t exclusively just for teens? In fact, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children undergo an orthodontic consultation by age 7, since phase 1 treatment can often be beneficial. On the other hand, there is no upper age limit for orthodontic treatment, meaning adults at any stage in life can seek out a straighter smile.

3. Modern Braces Are Possible Thanks to NASA

Did you know that NASA actually developed the alloy that’s used in metal braces? Space shuttles need to be built from heat-resistant materials so that they don’t sustain damage when entering or exiting the Earth’s atmosphere. These metals can maintain their shape when bent, making them perfect for the flexible wires that are used with braces!

4. Modern Braces Have a Long & Storied History

Though they might seem like a modern invention, today’s iteration of braces has been around for almost 300 years. French physician Pierre Fauchard created the first braces in 1728 using a horseshoe-shaped piece of iron that helped expand the palate, before publishing a book that details his teeth-straightening methods. It’s also worth mentioning that long before this, ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians tried creating their own versions of braces using animal-hide cords and metal posts.

Braces have come a long way over the years, but one thing remains the same: there are true health benefits to having a straight smile. That said, if you or a loved one needs orthodontic treatment, you have nothing to feel anxious about!
