Flossing with Invisalign: Tips for Maintaining This Crucial Hygiene Habit

One of the biggest benefits of Invisalign is convenience. Unlike traditional braces, your clear aligners are fully removable, so you can take them out when eating and enjoy your favorite foods without restrictions! However, with this flexibility comes responsibility. Before placing your aligners back in, it’s essential to brush and floss thoroughly—and the latter should never be neglected. Here’s a little more about the importance of flossing with Invisalign, along with some tips for ensuring you’re doing things the right way.

Why Flossing Matters with Invisalign

When you eat, food particles and plaque collect not only on the surfaces of your teeth but also between them. Brushing alone cannot fully remove the debris from these tight spaces, no matter your efforts. This means that if you skip flossing and place your aligners back in, you’re essentially sealing bacteria and food particles against your teeth for over 20 hours each day, or at least until you floss again!

Needless to say, this can greatly increase your risk of issues like cavities, gum inflammation, bad breath, and even dental staining. Because your aligners fit so snugly over your teeth, it’s crucial to maintain excellent oral hygiene during your treatment—and flossing is a major part of this equation. It’s the only way to truly remove that problem-causing bacteria and keep things as clean as they can be.

Tips for Flossing Correctly During Invisalign Treatment

To keep your smile healthy while it’s being transformed, here’s what you need to keep in mind when flossing:

  • Floss (and brush) your teeth after every meal or small snack before reinserting your trays.
  • Gently guide the floss between each tooth and curve it along the gumline to remove plaque effectively.
  • Use about 18 inches of floss and wrap one end around your finger, carefully moving from section to section as you work your way around your mouth.
  • Rinse with water if you can’t immediately floss or brush, but don’t do this to replace the habit.
  • Use traditional floss, floss picks, or a water flosser—whichever you prefer, as long as it helps you stay consistent.

Invisalign makes straightening your teeth more convenient, but it falls on you to wear your aligners, follow other guidelines, and maintain your teeth and gums. By brushing and flossing every time you remove your aligners, you’re setting yourself up for resounding success!
