Early Signs That Your Child Might Need Orthodontic Care

Kids can often be very hard to read. They don’t always tell you when something hurts, and they sometimes even adapt to discomfort without ever complaining about it. However, when their teeth are involved, it’s best not to leave things unaddressed. If your child seems to struggle with biting and chewing their food, or is constantly biting the insides of their cheeks, it might be time for their orthodontic evaluation. Here’s what you need to know.

What Is Early Orthodontic Intervention?

Sometimes called Phase 1 treatment, early orthodontic intervention takes place while a child still has a mixture of baby and permanent teeth—typically between the ages of 6 and 10. The goal isn’t necessarily to complete orthodontic treatment at this stage, but rather, to guide the development of the jaw and incoming permanent teeth. In turn, this usually makes it so that future treatment is simpler, shorter, or in some cases, completely unnecessary.

What Signs Might Indicate That My Child Needs Braces?

Several different warning signs might let you know if your child needs braces in the near future, including:

  • Constant cheek biting and difficulty chewing food
  • Mouth breathing, especially during sleep, which can affect jaw development over time
  • Early or late loss of baby teeth
  • Thumb sucking or pacifier use that has continued past age 3 or 4
  • Crowded, crooked, or overlapping teeth as the permanent teeth come in
  • Speech difficulties, including lisps
  • Jaw shifting or clicking when opening and closing the mouth

How Your Child’s Orthodontist Can Help

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. Usually at this point, enough permanent teeth have come in for an orthodontist to identify problems that aren’t yet visible to the naked eye.

This initial orthodontic consultation is very straightforward and comfortable for kids. The orthodontist will gently examine your child’s teeth, bite, and jaw development, often with the help of X-rays. If early treatment is recommended, they’ll explain exactly why, what it would involve, and what happens if you choose to wait.

If something about the way your child chews, speaks, or uses their mouth has caught your attention, don’t hesitate to seek an evaluation. It could make a significant difference in your child’s comfort, confidence, and long-term oral health!
