Can I Get Invisalign If I’ve Had Dental Work Done?

Dental restorations such as crowns, bridges, and even veneers have never been more popular when it comes to giving patients a way to repair dental damage, cover imperfections, and restore confidence in their smile. Simultaneously, Invisalign clear aligners have surged in popularity recently due to all the advantages they have over braces when it comes to straightening teeth. But can dental restorations and Invisalign go together, or does having dental work done disqualify you from the clear aligners? Here’s what you need to know.

How Do Restorations Impact Invisalign Treatment?

Even though dental restorations like crowns, bridges, or veneers won’t automatically prevent you from getting Invisalign, they do add a layer of complexity to treatment planning. Remember, Invisalign works by applying gentle, consistent pressure to shift teeth into their correct positions over time. While natural teeth respond to this pressure just fine, restorations can behave much differently.

Since crowns cover the entire visible portion of a tooth, they typically move along with aligners just fine. The same can often be said for veneers; while their polished surfaces might be too smooth for your aligners to get a good grip, it’s generally manageable with the help of Invisalign attachments. Dental bridges often present complications, and in some cases, movement might need to be planned around them.

Additionally, clear aligners are designed to grip onto the natural contours of your teeth, and since dental work can sometimes alter that shape, it can impact how well an aligner might fit. This is something that your orthodontist will have to account for while designing your aligners and overall treatment plan.

Your Consultation Sets the Stage for Successful Treatment

Every patient’s dental history is different, meaning there is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to Invisalign, especially if dental restorations are a part of the equation. That said, during a thorough consultation, your provider will be able to carefully review your dental records, examine your smile, and determine how to plan out your Invisalign treatment around your existing dental work. In any case, there are too many benefits you’d be passing up if you don’t embark on the path to a straighter smile!
