Braces are an exciting step toward a healthier, straighter smile—but along the way, many patients notice changes they weren’t expecting. While wearing the brackets and wires can take some getting used to, and while eating and brushing might be challenging at first, one peculiar change that can occur is swollen gum tissue. Although this can seem alarming, it’s often a temporary and manageable part of the orthodontic process. Here’s more about why this can happen and what you can do about it.
Temporary Gum Swelling Is Common
When braces are first placed or adjusted, your teeth begin (or continue) to slowly move through the bone and surrounding tissues. This movement can create mild inflammation in the gums, leading to tenderness or swelling—especially during the first few days after an adjustment. In many cases, this type of swelling is short-lived and resolves as your mouth adapts.
Oral Hygiene Plays a Part
Braces create more places for plaque and food particles to hide. If these areas aren’t cleaned thoroughly, bacteria can build up along the gumline and cause irritation or gingivitis. This is one of the most common reasons for swollen gums during braces treatment. Consistent brushing, flossing (or using floss threaders or water flossers), and regular professional cleanings are essential for keeping gums healthy while wearing braces. When oral hygiene improves, gum swelling often improves too.
Swollen Gums Can Sometimes Signal More
While temporary inflammation and hygiene-related swelling are common, not all gum swelling should be ignored. Persistent, painful, or worsening swelling may indicate an infection, advanced gum disease, or an overgrowth of gum tissue caused by prolonged irritation—all of which should be brought up with your orthodontist if things don’t improve with good oral care. Thankfully, gum disease can be managed with professional periodontal therapy if things get too severe.
Swollen gums during braces treatment are often temporary and treatable—but they’re also your body’s way of asking for a little extra care. With the right guidance and support, you can keep your gums healthy while staying on track toward your new smile!
