Helping Your Teen Navigate the School Day with Braces

Once your teen heads off to school each morning, keeping up with their orthodontic care shouldn’t be neglected; in fact, it’s more important than ever before when they are away from home for several hours! That said, with a little preparation, they can handle any braces mishaps that might come up, stay comfortable, and enjoy a nutritious diet. Here are a few things you should remind them about.

Pack a Small Braces Emergency Kit

Even though orthodontic emergencies are rare, they can still happen. But one of the best ways you can set your teen up for any unexpected mishaps is by making sure they have a braces kit with them, either in their locker or backpack. This should include orthodontic wax to help soothe irritation and sore spots from wires or brackets, a travel-sized toothbrush, toothpaste, and braces-friendly dental flossers. Having these essentials on hand means your child can quickly manage anything that comes up and stay comfortable.

Choose Lunch & Snacks Wisely

Certain foods are simply off-limits with braces, and it’s important that your teen knows what’s okay and what should be avoided. Sticky, hard, and chewy items are usually problematic. This includes popcorn, beef jerky, candy bars with nuts, and crusty breads, among other items. Be sure your child is planning ahead when it comes to lunch and midday snacks; yogurt, smoothies and protein shakes, cooked rice and pasta, and cut-up steamed veggies are all excellent, easy-to-bring lunch items.

Encourage Good Habits During the School Day

Remind your child that their braces are an investment, and they’ll only work if they adhere to their treatment guidelines. If they can’t brush their teeth immediately after eating, they should at least rinse their mouth with water. If they play contact sports, they will need a properly fitted mouthguard to protect their teeth and braces. If they do suffer a setback, they shouldn’t try to fix things on their own and should instead contact their orthodontist.

The bottom line is, with a little preparation, the right supplies, and a fair amount of personal responsibility, your teen can easily navigate the school day while ensuring their braces continue to straighten their smile!
