Bullying & Braces: How to Support Your Child During Their Orthodontic Journey

Getting braces is an exciting milestone for many kids, as it means a healthier smile is on the way! But for some children, it can also bring worries about how their friends and peers will react. While braces have become far more common and accepted than they once were, teasing and bullying can still happen. If your child is feeling anxious or has already faced disheartening comments, here’s how you can help them out.

Talk Openly with Your Child Before Treatment Begins

Let your child know what to expect before they kick off their orthodontic journey and remind them that braces are extremely common! Framing braces as a normal or even exciting part of growing up can help ease some of the anxiety around getting started. It can also help to remind your child why they’re wearing braces in the first place. Beyond a straighter smile, braces can improve their bite, make brushing and flossing easier, and set them up for better oral health down the road.

Share Stories of Others Who’ve Had Braces

Sometimes it helps for kids to know they aren’t alone. Sharing stories (or pictures) about family members, older siblings, or even stars and celebrities who wore braces as kids can normalize the experience and remind your child that plenty of people have undergone orthodontic treatment, which can be especially reassuring.

Watch for Signs of Bullying

Mood changes, reluctance to go to school, or self-consciousness about their smile can all be signs that something is bothering your child. Check in on them regularly and create a space where your child feels comfortable sharing what’s going on, whether it’s about their braces or anything else. If bullying continues, don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or school counselor. Your child shouldn’t have to face it alone, and you and the adults at school are their support system!

Build Confidence with Each Passing Day

Confidence goes a long way in helping kids handle teasing. Remind your child of all the good things about themselves that have nothing to do with their smile, and reinforce the idea that braces are temporary—but the results of straighter, healthier teeth will benefit them for life. Every child deserves to feel confident during their orthodontic journey, and a little extra support can make all the difference in the world!
