If your child’s dentist has recently informed you that your 8-year-old needs to see an orthodontist, you aren’t hearing things—in fact, you may even hear this when your little one is 7! The truth is, some children benefit greatly from early orthodontic treatment, even if braces seem like a rite-of-passage for teens and older patients. Here’s what you need to know about this process, along with some ways of knowing when it’s time to schedule that orthodontist appointment for your child.
What Is Phase 1 Orthodontics?
Also sometimes called “interceptive” orthodontics, this form of treatment can be started when there are still baby teeth present, but some adult teeth have erupted. This might seem a little odd—and you may be wondering why straightening both primary and permanent teeth is necessary. Simply put, phase 1 orthodontics is highly likely to make any future orthodontic treatment that your child may need far easier, faster, and less complicated. With a little bit of luck involved, it may even prevent the need for braces entirely.
When Is Phase 1 Orthodontics Needed?
Many young children have a bizarre-looking mouthful of teeth; there could be a mixture of tiny teeth, larger teeth, and even gaps that represent where teeth once were. In these cases, it’s easy to see why braces might be helpful; however, every child’s smile is different, and sometimes it’s not obvious if orthodontic treatment is needed. That’s why an orthodontic evaluation by age 7 or 8 is crucial. After this, phase 1 treatment can be used to:
- Correct the position of the jaw and dental arches
- Guide bone growth to make room for erupting teeth
- Correct improper development caused by non-nutritive habits (prolonged thumb sucking)
- Minimize the risk of damage to protruding front teeth
- Improve biting, chewing, and teeth function
- Enhance self-esteem and appearance
Addressing dental development when your child’s teeth are still falling out and coming in might seem a little counterintuitive, but in all honesty, there is no better opportunity—especially if it negates the need for treatment down the road!
